Cufra Madeira: The Northeners have Come to the Island

Não precisas de ir até ao Porto, para deliciares a "berdadeira" Francesinha.

WHEN WAS IT CREATED?

The Cufra is a historic restaurant in the city of Porto. It has been operating since September 14, 1974 (year of the revolution). Since then it has opened 3 more  venues, the Cufra Grill, the Cufra in Coimbra and now we have arrived in the best island in the world, in May of this year.

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE NAME?

Cufra is an Oasis in the middle of the Sahara Desert, just like the Cufra restaurant was in the middle of Boavista Avenue in 1974.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENTIATING FACTOR FROM OTHER VENUES?

Cufra Madeira was born out of the need to bring the best of the city of Porto to the island of Madeira. Our restaurant was entirely conceived so that the client could enter Porto, feel Porto, eat in Porto. Francesinha is Porto, Cufra is Porto. From the sauce, to the components of the Francesinha, but also by the cooking method, this is what differentiates us. At Cufra Madeira we are focused only on quality, hence the excellent feedback from most of our customers.

The kitchen is staffed by people from Porto. We also have an element from Coimbra and two from Madeira, always in a good mood to receive customers.

WHAT IS THE MOST SOUGHT OUT MEAL/BEVERAGE?

Francesinha. In every 100 clients that come through the door, 98 eat Francesinha. We have the Especialíssima, with potatoes, egg, and bacon, and the traditional, with steak or chicken. We have other options, such as the notorious Pica Pau (the tripeiros’ mince) and the delicious hush puppy for starters. In terms of drink the queen of them all, the beer. We always recommend Superbock, as it is also made in Porto.

Tripeiros* → word used by the Portuguese folk to refer to the inhabitants of the city of Porto
